A Humble Beginning: Willa Cather’s Early Life
Born in 1873, Willa spent the first nine years of her life in Virginia before her family moved to Nebraska. The family moved west in search of farmland and new opportunities, like many others at the time.
Quickly, Willa noticed the sweeping plains, immigrant families, and quiet intensity of the prairie life, inspiring the heart of many of her stories. Her writing stood apart from other writers at the time, in large part because of her description of the atmosphere and internal lives of the characters she created. Rather than just focusing on the plot, as many of the other writers did at that time, she leaned in and developed an immersive world that still engages readers to this day.
The Books That Changed Generations
Some of Cather’s most renowned novels are all rooted in the Nebraska prairie landscape. Her novel My Ántonia showcases the tale of a Bohemian immigrant growing up in the Great Plains. Told through the perspective of a childhood friend, it powerfully illustrates the resilience and unspoken strength of women.
Rounding out her “prairie trilogy”, as many call it, are her novels O Pioneers! and The Song of the Lark. The novels are reflective and powerful, keeping the readers engaged long past the final page. And through Cather’s writing, the plains become more than simply a setting. The plains are an active part of the story, influencing the characters throughout their journey.
Other major works include One of Ours, earning a Pulitzer Prize in 1923, as well as Death Comes for the Archbishop.

The Prairie’s Role in Willa Cather’s Writing
If you’ve ever thought of the Great Plains, you’ve probably thought that they are just flat or empty. Willa Cather knew better. She saw the beauty in the land and communicated that perfectly in her novels. In more ways than one, the prairie was her muse. It was a place of escape, where she could develop her character's emotions without having the backdrop steal the show.
"This country was mostly wild pasture and as naked as the back of your hand. I was little and homesick and lonely and my mother was homesick and nobody paid any attention to us. So the country and I had it out together and by the end of the first autumn, that shaggy grass country had gripped me with a passion I have never been able to shake. It has been the happiness and the curse of my life."
